History of Midland Beach!

In the 1890s, Midland Beach emerged as a flourishing resort area boasting a 1,700-foot pier extending into the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors could board the steamboat William Story, destined for the Battery at the tip of Lower Manhattan. The extensive pier prompted the Midland Beach Railway Company to operate a miniature railroad, facilitating access for fishermen and other visitors to the pier’s end.

This resort gained popularity, visible from Coney Island across the Lower New York Bay. Nighttime at Midland Beach offered a splendid view of fireworks from Coney Island. The destination provided a diverse range of attractions, including theater performances, a sandy beach, designated picnic areas, convenient snack kiosks, an immersive “Aquarama” panorama, and the addition of a saltwater swimming pool in 1924.

Midland Beach became a sought-after retreat for New Yorkers, featuring numerous hotels and bungalows. Its attractions mirrored those of Coney Island, featuring Japanese bowling, a Thompson scenic railway, a dance pavilion, a carousel, a circle swing, and a theater. The beach also featured a boardwalk, and three distinct wooden coasters graced the Midland Beach landscape.

The decline of Midland Beach as a resort destination unfolded in 1924 and was further exacerbated in 1929 by a series of fires that specifically targeted the pier and its surrounding attractions.

It’s important to note that what makes a place “good to live in can vary from person to person.
